Table of Contents for Root Meanings

General notes:

  • Root Meanings is a work in progress that will continue to emerge and evolve. All entries are subject to evolution.
  • The entries in Root Meanings have been sourced and refined until they calibrate all the way for truth. Older entries may need to be updated for this to be the case.
  • The primary criterion for inclusion in Root Meanings is calibration for truth. These entries are not intended to be consistent with any pre-existing spiritual teachings or traditions. The entries in Root Meanings may differ from or go beyond widely accepted teachings. Moreover, some of what has been sourced may be novel.
  • Many excellent and useful definitions are not yet included. If you would like to make a suggestion, you may do so here.
  • If you find Root Meanings to be helpful, please considering sponsoring this work or making a donation. Your support helps to ensure that the definitions will continue to be refined and offered free of charge to the world.
  • The intention is to distribute Root Meanings under a suitable Creative Commons license before the end of the decade. In the meantime, unless otherwise noted, all works in progress and the final work are copyright Jeff Vander Clute.

Absorption

  • Focus on an activity to such an extent that one merges with, or “loses oneself” in, the activity.
  • Focus on the presence, silence, or stillness that is beyond activity to such an extent that one merges with, or “loses oneself” in, the activity or presence, silence, or stillness.
  • In absorption there is little or no awareness of anything beyond the specific focus.
  • Meditative absorption is withdrawing attention from outer phenomena while engaging in meditation.
  • In deep meditative absorption, attention is withdrawn from the senses to such an extent that there is almost no awareness of outer phenomena.
  • In deeper states of meditative absorption, attention is withdrawn to such an extent that there is almost no awareness of outer or inner phenomena.
  • Through practices of meditative absorption, one transcends the outer world, the inner world, and ultimately all of the content of Mind.
  • Ultimately, meditative absorption brings one back to being All That Is.
  • Through the practice of Supreme Absorption, one attains the absence of wavering from Supreme Realization.
  • One in Supreme Absorption, who attains Supreme Realization, is naturally present as THE SUPREME and has no need to transcend the outer world, the inner world, or the contents of Mind. Notions of absorption and nonabsorption fall away and all is allowed to be as it is.
