The Ladder of Awakening
March 2023 • Revision: 20 July 2026
The Ladder of Awakening is a model and a metaphor for appreciating how the many spiritual teachings and traditions (including the sciences) fit together to support people in awakening to what is most real and true. All genuine teachings and traditions are helpful within their scope. Even so, not all paths will take one to the ultimate recognition. As an example, western science starts at rung 1 on the Ladder (the beginning of logic and reason) and continues to rung 5 (initial awakening to nonlocality and timelessness). Western science will advance to higher rungs of awakening once it deepens to include nonlocal consciousness. Meanwhile, those who are at or below rung 5 on the awakening journey can be helped by western science whereas those who are above the fifth rung will likely feel hindered by its limitations.
The apparent structures of reality change as one climbs the Ladder. At the bottom of the Ladder, it is easy to believe that people, phenomena, causes, and effects are separate from one another since reductionism appears to describe the world accurately. Higher on the ladder, the interconnectedness of life is clearly evident, and quantum field theories offer a more holistic description of reality than reductionist theories. Toward the top of the Ladder, oneness is known directly and far subtler sciences open up. At the top of the Ladder, all structures and theories collapse into the singularity of apex awakeness, and it is obvious that all models – including the Ladder of Awakening – are temporary learning devices.
Importantly, the Ladder is a tool for accelerating the journey of awakening rather than a map of reality. Since what is most real transcends form and structure, all maps of reality are provisional. As one awakens more and more fully, the experience of creation changes and the forms of meaning making (including maps) that were helpful earlier on the journey tend to fall away. Belief systems and scientific paradigms are evolved, superseded, and eventually discarded as the limitations of prior understandings of reality are surpassed. Ultimately, all belief systems and scientific paradigms are transcended and forgotten.
Table 1: The Ladder of Awakening
The Ladder of Awakening has ten rungs. While the metaphor of rungs on a ladder offers helpful reference points for understanding where one is on the journey of realization, it is not to be taken literally.
Note that the tenth rung has by far the most detail since this is where reality as such is revealed, and there is much more to say about infinite reality than finite unreality.
